JOSEPHINE AND NAPOLEON
"At some point in every man’s life, he thinks of himself as an Emperor, a “Napoleon”… bold, decisiveand in control of his domain. Conversely, at some point in every woman's life, she thinks of herself as a “Josephine,” a siren irresistible and dangerous. Of course the reality is that we are never who we think we are, and others see us quite differently from the image we have painted."

PIMENTO MORI
“Legend has it that when Roman generals paraded
through the streets of the Eternal City, they would
have a slave continually whispering in their ear;
“Memento Mori, remember you are mortal.”
The thought is echoed in classical antiquity in
Horace’s dictum “Seize the Day, Carpe Diem.”
I would have painted that but life is too short
to paint smelly fish.”

CUSTER'S LAST CUSTARD
"When I was very young my father would baby-sit my sister andI on Saturdays. That meant that we went with him to the local
pub. Behind the bar was a large print of the epic The Battle
of Little Big Hornby Edgar Paxson. It was the first painting
I remember and I looked forward to seeing it every week. Of
course, at the time, I thought it was Custard's Last Stand.
A few years ago I saw a print of it and enjoyed it even more."

THE JURY
"The story has it that the origin of the twelve man Jury originated from the belief that a panel of men comprised of one person from every sign of the zodiac would be a well balanced forum. SAINT JOAN OF ARC
“She was a quiet country girl until she got caught up in the turmoil of her day. I am always curious about the lives of famous people before they become famous. Usually remarkable people lead
very mundane lives before fate deals them their hand. Perhaps if Joan were alive today, she would have a cell phone glued to her ear, giggling about boys with her little friends rather than being burned atthe stake with green wood.”
